About this qualification
SIT20322 is where most hospitality careers start. The register describes people with “a defined and limited range of hospitality operational skills and basic industry knowledge”, working on “mainly routine and repetitive tasks” under direct supervision.
Twelve units: six core and six electives. The core is deliberately broad — working with others, sourcing industry information, using hospitality skills, interacting with customers, social and cultural sensitivity, and safe work practices. None of it is tied to a single venue type.
The elective bank is where the qualification takes its shape. One unit must come from Group A (hygiene), three from Group B, and the last two can come from Group B, elsewhere in SIT, or any other current training package. Group B spans housekeeping, food and beverage, gaming, espresso, bar work and front office — so two people holding SIT20322 may have trained for quite different jobs.
There are no entry requirements, and no licensing attaches to the qualification itself. Individual units can carry their own requirements — responsible service of alcohol being the obvious one.

Frequently asked questions
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records no entry requirements for SIT20322.
- Do I need my RSA to enrol?
- Not to enrol. Responsible service of alcohol is an elective unit (SITHFAB021), and venues that serve alcohol will generally want it. State liquor regulators set their own currency rules for RSA certification — check with the regulator in your state.
- What is the difference between this and SIT30622?
- Level and independence. Certificate II describes routine work under direct supervision; Certificate III describes well-developed skills used with some independence, and adds coaching others in job skills to the core.
- Which electives should I pick?
- That depends on the venue you want to work in — housekeeping, bar, gaming and front office all sit in Group B. Ask each provider which Group B units they actually deliver before you enrol; no provider offers the whole bank.
- Is this the same as the old SIT20316?
- SIT20322 replaced SIT20316. Check the register entry for the equivalence status if you hold the older code.
