About this qualification

MEM20105 is tied directly to industrial award classification, which almost nothing else in this directory is. The register states it “covers the skills and knowledge required of workers employed as Engineering/manufacturing Employees — Level III as defined in the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award”, and was “specifically developed to reflect the minimum training requirement specified in the Award”.

In plain terms: this qualification exists because an industrial award requires it. That is a different reason to hold a qualification than most, and it is worth knowing if you are being asked to complete it by an employer.

It is packaged unusually too — five core units, then electives to the value of at least 30 points rather than a fixed number of units. Points attached to prerequisites count toward the total, and up to 6 points may come from other endorsed training packages.

The register also notes the packaging assumes competency is developed through a combination of on and off the job learning.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this qualification linked to an award?
Because it was built that way. The register states MEM20105 was specifically developed to reflect the minimum training requirement specified in the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award for Engineering/manufacturing Employees at Level III.
What does “30 points” mean?
The MEM package weights units by size rather than counting them. You complete the five core units, then electives worth at least 30 points between them — so the number of units varies depending on which ones you pick.
Can I use units from another training package?
Up to 6 points' worth, provided those units are available for inclusion at Certificate II level. The rest must come from the MEM elective list.
Are there entry requirements?
The register records entry requirements as not applicable, and no licensing or certification requirements apply to the qualification itself.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. The register notes the packaging assumes a combination of on and off the job learning, which usually means employment alongside study.
