About this qualification

MEM30219 is the mechanical engineering trade qualification: fitters, machinists and maintenance tradespeople in metal, engineering and manufacturing.

It must be undertaken through a training contract or formal trade recognition. That is written into the register, not a provider policy. In practice it means an apprenticeship, or an RPL assessment against existing trade experience.

It is points-based, not unit-count based. You need 96 points: the 12 core units total 33 points, at least 40 points come from Groups A, B and C, and a maximum of 23 points from Group D. Two apprentices can complete very different unit sets and both hold the same qualification.

The core is the trade floor — technical drawings, engineering measurement, computations, hand and power tools, and assisting with on-the-job training of others.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just enrol and pay for it?
No. The register requires it to be undertaken through a training contract or formal trade recognition. That means an apprenticeship, or RPL against trade experience you already have.
Why is it measured in points?
MEM qualifications weight units by size rather than counting them. 96 points is the target; the 12 core units carry 33 of them.
How is it different from Fabrication?
MEM30219 is mechanical — fitting, machining, maintenance. MEM31925 is fabrication — welding, boilermaking, sheet metal. They share all 12 core units.
Does Certificate II count towards it?
MEM20422 Engineering Pathways is a recognised entry route and units may be credited, but it is not a substitute for the training contract.
How many providers deliver it?
54 providers can deliver it.
