About this qualification

MEM31925 is the fabrication engineering trade: welding, boilermaking, sheet metal and structural steel work in metal, engineering and manufacturing.

Like the mechanical trade, it must be done under a training contract or through formal trade recognition. It is an apprenticeship qualification, not one you can simply enrol in.

The elective bank is the largest in the family — 103 units across Groups A to G. Combined with the points system (96 points, 33 from core, at least 40 from Groups A–G and up to 23 from the final group), it means a fabrication apprentice's unit set is shaped almost entirely by the employer's work.

It shares all 12 core units with MEM30219 Mechanical Trade. The two diverge entirely in the electives.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the boilermaker qualification?
It is the trade qualification boilermakers and welders hold. The register calls the role Engineering Tradesperson - Fabrication.
Can I do it without an apprenticeship?
Only through formal trade recognition — an RPL assessment against fabrication experience you already have. Otherwise it requires a training contract.
How is it different from Mechanical?
The 12 core units are identical. Fabrication goes to welding, cutting and forming; mechanical goes to fitting, machining and maintenance.
Why 103 electives?
Fabrication covers a very wide range of processes and materials. The points system lets an employer's actual work shape the unit set.
