About this qualification
MEM20422 is a taster qualification, and the register is unusually blunt about it: “This qualification develops trade-like skills and is not intended to develop trade-level skills.”
The example the register itself gives is welding. The outcome is not the theory and practice of welding — it is being introduced to welding, seeing how it joins metal, and getting the chance to weld some metal together. Machining is described the same way: something produced on a lathe, not the theory and practice of machining.
Twelve units: 4 core, then a minimum of 7 Group A electives and a maximum of 1 Group B elective. The packaging rule is strict about that split, and the register adds that no other descriptor can be used for the qualification.
It is a pre-apprenticeship. If the goal is the trade itself, that is MEM30219 Mechanical or MEM31925 Fabrication — both of which must be done under a training contract.

Where it sits
Engineering Pathways is the taster; the two Certificate IIIs are the trades. Both trades must be done under a training contract or trade recognition.

Frequently asked questions
- Will this make me a tradesperson?
- No, and the register says so directly. It develops trade-like skills, not trade-level skills. The trade qualifications are MEM30219 and MEM31925.
- Does it count towards an apprenticeship?
- It is designed as a pathway in, and units may be credited, but the trade itself must be completed under a training contract or through formal trade recognition.
- What does the basic engineering project involve?
- MEMPE006 is the integrating unit — a small project that brings together the skills sampled across the electives.
- Are there entry requirements?
- The register records none for this qualification.
