About this qualification

SIR50116 covers “individuals who manage a retail business, multiple retail stores or departments, following a business strategy to deliver profitable results”. They support senior management and provide leadership to retail teams.

Only four core units, and each one is strategic rather than operational: undertaking strategic planning in retail, leading the change process, providing leadership to others, and driving retail profitability.

Entry is open to people holding Certificate IV in Retail Management, or with relevant industry employment experience involving the skills described in the SIR40316 core units. As at Certificate IV, experience is an equal pathway.

The register names small business owner alongside area manager, state manager, senior store manager and cluster manager. This is as much a qualification for people running their own stores as for people running someone else’s.

Frequently asked questions

What is the entry requirement?
Entry is open to people who have achieved a Certificate IV in Retail Management, or who have relevant industry employment experience in a job role involving the skills and knowledge described in the core units of SIR40316.
Only nine providers?
Yes — nine nationally, and none of them a TAFE. It is one of the thinnest provider lists on this site, which makes checking delivery mode and location before you commit especially worthwhile.
Only four core units at Diploma level?
The core is small because the six electives carry the specialisation. What every graduate shares is strategic planning, leading change, leading people and driving profitability.
Is it worth it if I own the store?
The register names small business owner as one of the outcomes. Driving retail profitability and strategic planning are the units most owners point to.
What comes after this?
Nothing higher in the SIR package. The usual next steps are BSB leadership and management qualifications, or higher education.
