About this qualification

SIR40316 covers “individuals who lead a frontline team and manage day-to-day operations of a retail store or department to implement and deliver on organisational objectives and standards”.

They work with independence, “taking responsibility for their own functions and outputs”. This is the point where retail stops being a job on the floor and becomes running the floor.

There is an entry requirement, and it is a generous one. Entry is open to people who hold Certificate III in Retail or who have relevant industry employment experience involving the skills described in the SIR30216 core units. Experience counts, formally.

Eleven units, seven core, and the core is unmistakably managerial: monitoring retail store financials, creating a customer-centric culture, maintaining employee relations, leading a frontline team, maintaining store security, achieving sales results, and maintaining workplace safety.

Frequently asked questions

What is the entry requirement?
Entry is open to people who have achieved a Certificate III in Retail, or who have relevant industry employment experience in a job role involving the skills and knowledge described in the core units of SIR30216 Certificate III in Retail.
I have years on the floor but no Certificate III. Can I enrol?
The experience pathway is written into the register as an equal alternative, not a concession. How a provider evidences it is up to them — ask early.
What does it add over Certificate III?
Money and people. Monitoring store financials, maintaining employee relations, leading a frontline team and achieving sales results are all core here and none of them appear at Certificate III.
Only 43 providers for a store manager qualification?
Yes, and that is worth knowing. Retail employs enormous numbers of people but comparatively few providers deliver the management qualification — many large retailers train in-house instead.
What comes next?
SIR50116 Diploma of Retail Leadership, which lists this qualification as its entry pathway.
