About this qualification
ICT50220 covers people “who have established specialised skills in a technical ICT function”, carrying out moderately complex tasks “working independently, as part of a team or leading a deliverable with others”.
Twenty units, only six core. Fourteen electives, and the register uses them to define fourteen named specialisations — the widest set of awarded specialisations anywhere in the national register.
The register also names an outcome most VET qualifications do not: these skills may be applied “as a business owner (sole trader/contractor)”. A large share of Diploma-level IT work in Australia is contracted, and the qualification is written knowing it.
The core is small and deliberately non-technical: originating and developing concepts, promoting cyber security awareness, leading a team, matching ICT needs to strategic direction, IP and privacy, and managing client problems. The specialisation carries the technical weight.

Frequently asked questions
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records entry requirements as “Nil” — which surprises people given the level.
- Which specialisation should I choose?
- That depends entirely on the work you want. Cyber security, cloud and data carry the strongest demand; game art and design is the most competitive. Ask each provider which specialisations they actually deliver before you enrol.
- Can I get more than one specialisation?
- The register says the elective choice “can serve to provide the qualification with one or more” of the specialisations. Whether that is practical within twenty units is a question for the provider.
- Do I need Certificate IV first?
- Not formally. Many people enter the Diploma directly, and providers assess prior experience.
- Is this equivalent to a degree?
- No. It is AQF Level 5; a bachelor degree is Level 7. Many universities grant credit toward an IT degree for this Diploma — ask the university, not the provider.
