About this qualification

ICT40120 covers people “who are job ready and competent in a wide range of information and communications technology roles”, applying a broad range of skills in varied work contexts.

Twenty units, but only seven are core. Thirteen electives is where the qualification takes its shape — and the register uses them to define seven named specialisations.

The core is the professional floor rather than a technical one: advanced critical thinking, contributing to cyber security risk management, identifying and evaluating emerging technologies, working collaboratively, complying with IP, ethics and privacy, introductory programming, and resolving client ICT problems.

ICTICT451 Comply with IP, ethics and privacy policies in ICT environments is core at every level of this ladder. The register treats it as non-negotiable, and it is worth noticing.

Frequently asked questions

Are there entry requirements?
No. The register records entry requirements as “Nil”.
How do I get a specialisation on my certificate?
By choosing electives to the pattern the register sets for that specialisation. The rules are printed at the end of the qualification on training.gov.au. Ask each provider which specialisations they actually deliver — no provider offers all seven.
Is gaming development really a specialisation here?
Yes, at Certificate IV. The Diploma splits it further into game art and design, and game programming.
Do I need Certificate III first?
Not formally. The register sets no entry requirement, and providers will assess your background.
Is there cyber security in this?
BSBXCS404 Contribute to cyber security risk management is core. A dedicated cyber security specialisation appears at Diploma level.
