About this qualification

ICT30120 is the way into information technology. The register lists what it can lead to: “animation, basic cloud computing, basic cyber awareness, digital media skills, generalist IT support services, networking, programming, systems and web development”.

Twelve units, six core, six elective — and that even split is the whole story. The core is the common ground: critical and creative thinking, securely managing personally identifiable information, working in a team, IP ethics and privacy in ICT environments, introductory programming, and providing ICT advice to clients.

Everything that makes it a networking qualification, or a programming one, or a cyber one, sits in the six electives. Two holders of ICT30120 may have almost nothing technical in common.

BSBXCS303 Securely manage personally identifiable information being core is worth noting — privacy handling is treated as foundational, not specialist, which is a reasonable reading of where the industry is.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a programming qualification or a support qualification?
Both, or neither — it depends entirely on the six electives. The register lists animation, cloud, cyber awareness, digital media, support, networking, programming and web development as possible outcomes from the same code.
How do I compare providers?
By their elective list. Half the qualification is elective, and that half determines whether you come out able to build a network, write code or run a help desk. Ask for the units before you enrol.
Is this enough to get an IT job?
It is the standard entry qualification for support and junior technical roles. In IT, demonstrable work and vendor certifications often carry as much weight, so ask what a provider builds alongside the units.
Are there entry requirements?
No. The register records entry requirements for ICT30120 as Nil.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
