About this qualification
CPC30620 is the painting and decorating trade qualification for residential and commercial construction work. The register names the occupational title simply: Painter and Decorator.
The packaging is unusually rigid. 26 of the 29 units are core, leaving just 3 electives. Most trades leave far more room; here the register has decided what a painter must know almost in full.
The core reaches well beyond paint. Restricted height scaffolding, working at heights, elevated work platforms to 11 metres, and trestle and plank systems are all core — because painters spend their working life off the ground.
Licensing differs by state and territory. The register is explicit that painting and decorating licensing requirements differ and that you should consult the relevant regulatory authority — in several states painting work above a dollar threshold needs a licence.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a licence to work as a painter?
- It depends on the state or territory. The register states licensing and regulatory requirements differ and must be checked with the relevant authority. Several states licence painting work above a value threshold.
- Why is scaffolding in a painting qualification?
- Because painters work at height constantly. Restricted height scaffolding, working at heights, elevated work platforms and trestle and plank systems are all core units.
- Only three electives?
- Yes — 26 of the 29 units are core. This is one of the most prescribed trade qualifications on the register.
- Is it an apprenticeship?
- The register notes it is suitable for an Australian Apprenticeship pathway, which is the usual route, though it is not mandated the way the MEM trades are.
- How many providers deliver it?
- 234 providers can deliver it.
