About this qualification
CPC33020 is the bricklayer's trade qualification. The register describes “a bricklayer, blocklayer or paver who may have responsibility for undertaking heritage bricklaying, refractory bricklaying, bricklaying, blocklaying and paving work in residential, industrial and commercial contexts”.
Twenty core units, and they are unambiguously practical: masonry veneer construction, cavity brick, walls and corners, multi-thickness walls and piers, flashings and damp proof course, masonry arches, curved walls, and masonry structural systems.
Three specialist groups sit on top — traditional and heritage bricklaying, refractory bricklaying, and paving. Refractory is the one worth knowing about: it is furnace and kiln lining work, an industrial specialisation with a very different employer base to housing.
Constructing masonry arches and curved walls being core rather than heritage electives is a small thing that says a lot about how the trade defines itself.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an apprenticeship?
- Not as a register requirement — entry requirements are recorded as none. In practice bricklaying is an apprenticeship trade, and twenty practical core units make other routes difficult.
- What is refractory bricklaying?
- Furnace, kiln and boiler lining — heat-resistant masonry inside industrial plant. It is one of the three specialist groups and has a completely different employer base to housing work.
- Does this license me?
- Building and trade licensing is set by state and territory authorities and differs by jurisdiction. The qualification is commonly part of an application rather than the licence itself.
- Is paving really part of the bricklaying trade?
- Yes — the register names paver as an occupational title for this qualification, and paving is one of the three specialist elective groups.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Apprenticeship pathways typically run three to four years.
