About this qualification
CPC20220 is the front door. The register describes it as providing “a pathway to the primary trades in the construction industry with the exception of plumbing” — carpentry, bricklaying, joinery and general construction.
Ten units: five core and five electives. It is deliberately small, because it is an introduction rather than a trade. The core is planning and organising work, measurements and calculations, working effectively and sustainably in the industry, undertaking a basic construction project, and applying WHS requirements.
The register is candid about how the trades actually work: “trade outcomes are predominantly achieved through an Australian Apprenticeship”. This qualification introduces you to the recognised trade callings and lets you sample off-site occupations like joinery alongside on-site ones.
It is also the natural feeder into CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry — and, notably, not into plumbing, which the register excludes explicitly.

Frequently asked questions
- Does this make me a tradesperson?
- No. It is a pathway qualification. The register says trade outcomes are predominantly achieved through an Australian Apprenticeship — this gets you started and gives you the white-card-level safety and site basics.
- Does it lead to plumbing?
- No, and the register says so directly: it is a pathway to the primary trades “with the exception of plumbing”. Plumbing has its own entry route through CPC32420.
- Is this the white card?
- CPCCWHS2001 Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry is a core unit, and general construction induction is commonly delivered alongside. Confirm with the provider whether the induction card itself is included.
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records no entry requirements for CPC20220.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Many people complete it at school or as a pre-apprenticeship.
