About this qualification

TAE40122 is the qualification that makes someone a trainer. The register describes “entry-level vocational education and training teachers, trainers and assessors” delivering training and assessment in “registered training organisations, enterprises, community organisations, schools and other VET provision contexts”.

Twelve units, six core: assessing competence, participating in assessment validation, facilitating vocational training, using nationally recognised training products, designing and developing training plans, and working effectively in the VET sector.

Its entry requirement is unlike any other on this site. The register requires you to demonstrate vocational competence in your proposed training and assessing area — defined as broad industry knowledge and experience. You cannot enrol in the abstract. You have to already be good at something, and this qualification teaches you to teach it.

TAEPDD401 Work effectively in the VET sector is core, and it is the newest idea in the qualification: understanding the regulatory environment you are about to operate inside, not just the classroom you stand in front of.

Frequently asked questions

What is the entry requirement exactly?
The register requires you to demonstrate vocational competence in your proposed training and assessing area — broad industry knowledge and experience in the field you intend to teach. Providers assess this before enrolment, usually through qualifications, work history and referees.
Do I need this to train in an provider?
Trainer and assessor requirements are set by the VET regulator through the Standards for providers, not by the training package. TAE40122 or its predecessors is the usual way those requirements are met — confirm the current requirement with ASQA or your state regulator.
Is TAE40122 different from TAE40116?
Yes — TAE40122 is the current version. TAE40116 is superseded. If a provider is advertising the older code, ask why.
Can I get TAE40122 through RPL?
Often, yes, for experienced trainers who never formalised it. The vocational competence requirement applies regardless, and assessment practice evidence is substantial.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. The register notes the volume of learning is significant for a Certificate IV.
