About this qualification
SHB30516 is the barbering trade qualification. Twenty-one core units — one of the heaviest cores in the whole training system — because barbering is a hands-on trade and almost all of it is compulsory.
The core covers what you would expect on the floor: cutting structures, clipper work, over-comb, beards and moustaches, head and face shaving, plus scalp conditions, salon transactions and building your own client base.
Twenty-six units all up: twenty-one core, five elective.

Frequently asked questions
- Is barbering the same as hairdressing?
- No. They are separate qualifications with separate codes. Barbering carries the shaving and beard work; hairdressing carries colour and chemical services.
- Can I do both?
- Yes, and a lot of people do. There is overlap in the cutting and salon units, so the second one is usually shorter than starting from scratch.
- Why so many core units?
- Because it is a trade. The register leaves very little to choice — twenty-one of the twenty-six units are set.
