About this qualification

FNS40222 is the qualification the bookkeeping industry runs on. The register names its audience precisely: “business activity statement (BAS) agents and contract bookkeepers; and those employees performing bookkeeping tasks for organisations in a range of industries”.

Thirteen units, ten of them core — a high proportion, and appropriate for work with statutory reporting attached. The core covers processing transactions, subsidiary accounts and ledgers, operational budgets, financial statements for non-reporting entities, financial reports, computerised accounting systems, spreadsheets, and working effectively in the industry.

Two core units carry the FNSTPB prefix — completing business activity and instalment activity statements, and establishing and maintaining payroll systems. TPB stands for Tax Practitioners Board, and those units exist because registration as a BAS agent requires specified education.

That is the practical point of this qualification: it is a step toward BAS agent registration, which is granted by the Tax Practitioners Board, not by the training package.

Frequently asked questions

Does this make me a registered BAS agent?
No. Registration is granted by the Tax Practitioners Board and requires specified education plus relevant experience and other conditions. The two FNSTPB core units in this qualification exist to meet the education component — check the Board's current requirements directly.
What are FNSTPB411 and FNSTPB412?
The Tax Practitioners Board units: completing business activity and instalment activity statements, and establishing and maintaining payroll systems. They are core here, which is why this qualification is the standard route for contract bookkeepers.
Do I need a Certificate III first?
No. The register records entry requirements as Nil, though a background in business or accounts helps considerably.
Can I get FNS40222 through RPL?
Often, yes, for experienced bookkeepers. Whether RPL is offered is decided by each provider, and the TPB has its own view on what evidence supports registration.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
