About this qualification

AHC31424 is one of the most configurable qualifications in this directory. Sixteen units, and only two are core: conducting an ecological and cultural site inspection prior to works, and contributing to workplace health and safety processes. The other fourteen are elective.

That structure exists because the field genuinely splits. The register names the specialisations: Indigenous land management, ecological restoration, land parks and wildlife management, pest control, conservation earthworks, marine, fire, and mined land rehabilitation.

That last one matters if you work in resources. Mine site rehabilitation is a statutory obligation with a workforce behind it, and this is the qualification that trains for it — sitting in the agriculture and conservation package rather than the mining one, which is exactly why nobody finds it.

AHCECR309 Conduct an ecological and cultural site inspection prior to works being one of only two core units is the whole philosophy of the qualification in a single line: look properly before you touch anything.

What it covers

2Core units
14Elective units

Sixteen units in total: two core plus fourteen electives. Elective units must maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

Only two core units — the fourteen electives are where the specialisation lives:

  • AHCECR309 Conduct an ecological and cultural site inspection prior to works
  • AHCWHS302 Contribute to workplace health and safety processes

Frequently asked questions

Is mined land rehabilitation really in this qualification?
Yes. The register lists it as a named specialisation. It sits in the agriculture and conservation package rather than the resources package, which is why people working in mining rarely find it.
Only two core units?
Yes — an ecological and cultural site inspection unit and a WHS unit. Everything else is elective, because fire management, marine work and mine rehabilitation share very little practice.
How do I compare providers?
By the specialisation they deliver and the fourteen units they package. Two holders of this code may have almost nothing in common. Ask for the unit list first.
Do I need a licence for the pest control specialisation?
Chemical use is licensed by state and territory authorities. The qualification may support an application but is not the licence — check with your state regulator.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.

Specialisations

AHC31424 carries nine named specialisations, printed on the testamur. With only two core units, the specialisation is effectively the whole qualification.

  • Mined Land Rehabilitation

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Mined Land Rehabilitation)

The two core units plus the mined land rehabilitation elective set — returning disturbed mine sites to a stable, agreed end land use.

Rehabilitation is a statutory obligation on mine operators. This is the qualification that trains the people doing it.

  • Ecological Restoration

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Ecological Restoration)

The core plus the restoration elective set — returning degraded land to functioning ecosystems.

  • Indigenous Land Management

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Indigenous Land Management)

The core plus the Indigenous land management elective set. Also available combined with Conservation Earthworks.

  • Land, Parks and Wildlife

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Land Parks and Wildlife)

The core plus the parks and wildlife elective set — the ranger pathway.

  • Conservation Earthworks

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Conservation Earthworks)

The core plus the earthworks elective set — erosion control, water management and landform works.

  • Fire

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Fire)

The core plus the fire elective set — planned burning and fire management in the landscape.

  • Marine

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Marine)

The core plus the marine elective set — coastal and marine ecosystem work.

  • Pest Controller

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (Pest Controller)

The core plus the pest control elective set. Check state licensing requirements separately — chemical use is licensed by state authorities.

  • No specialisation

Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management

Two core units plus fourteen electives drawn broadly, giving a general qualification without a specialisation on the testamur.
