About this qualification

AHC30722 is the general horticulture qualification. The register describes “general vocational job roles in the amenity horticulture industry” — parks, gardens, turf and grounds rather than production agriculture.

Seventeen units: eleven core and six electives. The core is unusually hands-on for a Certificate III — transporting and storing chemicals, applying chemicals to control pests weeds and diseases, operating pressurised irrigation, operating machinery, identifying and selecting plants, specialist amenity pruning, controlling weeds, controlling plant pests and diseases, soil improvement for garden and turf, workplace health and safety, and environmentally sustainable work practices.

Two of the eleven core units are chemical handling. That is the qualification telling you what the job actually involves, and it carries its own state-based licensing consequences.

The register includes an explicit warning worth repeating: this qualification “is not intended to be used as a substitute for AHC Training Package trade qualifications”. If you are after the arboriculture or landscape trade, this is not it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a trade qualification?
No, and the register says so directly: it is not intended as a substitute for AHC Training Package trade qualifications. It is a general vocational qualification for amenity horticulture roles.
Does the chemical handling give me a licence?
No. Chemical use is licensed by state and territory authorities. AHCCHM304 and AHCCHM307 are commonly required for those licences, but holding the units is not the same as holding the licence.
Amenity horticulture — what does that mean?
Parks, gardens, turf, grounds and landscapes, as opposed to production horticulture, which is growing crops commercially. Different work, different qualifications.
Are there entry requirements?
No. The register records no entry requirements for AHC30722, though providers may set their own.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
