About this qualification
CUA41320 is a qualification about becoming an artist rather than learning a technique. The register describes “individuals who are beginning to develop their own artistic voice and command of techniques in a range of art forms”.
Fifteen units, six core — and the core is unusual for a vocational qualification. Producing drawings to communicate ideas, realising a creative project, developing self as artist, developing and discussing ideas for your own creative work, and researching history and theory to inform your own practice.
CUAPPR414 Develop self as artist is a unit of competency. That is a striking thing to find on the national register, and it tells you what this qualification is actually for.
Nine electives, with at least four from Group A — the art forms. Twenty-eight providers nationally, the smallest field of any qualification built so far apart from the jewellery ladder.

Frequently asked questions
- Is “develop self as artist” really a unit of competency?
- Yes — CUAPPR414, and it is core. It is one of the more unusual entries on the national register, and it signals that this qualification is about practice and voice rather than a single technique.
- Which art forms does it cover?
- That depends on the nine electives, four of which must come from Group A. Painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textiles and digital forms all appear in the elective bank. Ask a provider what they deliver.
- Will this get me work as an artist?
- It develops practice and produces a body of work. Visual arts careers are driven by portfolio, exhibition and networks as much as qualifications — ask a provider what they build alongside the units.
- Are there entry requirements?
- The register records none for CUA41320.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register. Studio access and materials vary considerably between providers — worth asking about.
