About this qualification
NWP30222 is the water industry's operator qualification, and it is unusually flexible. The register describes it as covering “generalist water industry operations or specialisations in catchment and dams, civil construction, irrigation water supply, networks, and treatment”.
Only two units are core — WHS hazard identification and environmental procedures. Everything else is elective. That makes it the most configurable qualification in this directory, and it is why the specialisation matters more here than almost anywhere else: two people holding NWP30222 may share only two units.
The general qualification takes nine electives from anywhere in it. A specialisation takes five from a single group instead, or a defined combination for the treatment streams. Either way it totals eleven units.
Sixteen providers hold it nationally — a small field for a qualification this broad.

- NWPGEN019 Assess, implement and report environmental procedures

Frequently asked questions
- Which specialisation should I choose?
- The one matching the plant or network you work on. With only two core units shared across all eight, the specialisation is most of the qualification — this is not a detail you can leave until later.
- Can I do the general qualification instead?
- Yes. It takes nine electives from anywhere in the qualification and is awarded without a specialisation on the testamur. It suits people who do not yet know which part of the industry they will settle in.
- What is NWPGEN017 and why does it keep appearing?
- It is a required unit in both treatment specialisations — Treatment: Water and Wastewater, and Water Treatment. If you are heading for either, that unit is not optional.
- Are there entry requirements?
- No. The register records no entry requirements for NWP30222, and no licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to the qualification itself.
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
Specialisations
NWP30222 has seven named specialisations plus a general award, each printed on the testamur. With only two core units, the specialisation is effectively the qualification — choose it before you enrol, not after.
