About this qualification

FSK20119 is a preparation qualification. The register describes it as being for individuals who need “further foundation skills development to prepare for workforce entry or vocational training pathways” — reading, writing, oral communication, learning and numeracy, plus entry-level digital literacy and employability skills.

Fourteen units, of which exactly one is core: FSKLRG011 Use routine strategies for work-related learning. Everything else is elective, which makes this the most individually-shaped qualification on this site.

The elective rules do the structuring instead. Up to 5 units may come from Group A (numeracy), at least 5 must come from Group B, and 3 must come from a currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course other than FSK — so every graduate finishes with a taste of a real vocational area.

The skills are pitched primarily at Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3. Note the register’s own caveat: Foundation Skills Training Package qualifications may not be listed as an entry requirement for vocational qualifications.

Roles it maps to

FSK20119 prepares people for work or further training rather than for a named occupation.

What it covers

1Core unit
13Elective units

Fourteen units must be completed: 1 core and 13 electives. Of the electives, up to 5 may be selected from Group A (numeracy), at least 5 must be selected from Group B, 3 must be selected from any currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course other than FSK, and any remaining units may come from FSK or any other currently endorsed training package or accredited course. Electives must be relevant to vocational pathways and must not duplicate the outcomes of units already selected.

One core unit. The remaining thirteen are electives, shaped by the group rules above.

Frequently asked questions

Are there entry requirements?
No. The register records entry requirements as “Nil”.
Can this be required before I start another course?
No. The register states that Foundation Skills Training Package qualifications may not be listed as an entry requirement for vocational qualifications.
Why is there only one core unit?
Because the qualification is built around the individual. The group rules force breadth — numeracy, Group B foundation skills, and three units from a real vocational area — without dictating which.
What are the three non-FSK units for?
They give you genuine exposure to a vocational area, and they can often be credited if you go on to enrol in that qualification. Ask the provider which ones they offer.
What level are the skills pitched at?
Primarily Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 3.
