About this qualification

ACM30122 is the step up from entry-level animal care. The register describes work “in a broad range of roles in animal care facilities and services, including boarding/day care, breeding, shelters/holding centres, pet grooming, pet sitting and other animal businesses”, performed “under broad direction which involve discretion and judgement”.

Seventeen units, seven core and ten electives. The core moves decisively past feeding and cleaning: identifying behaviours and interacting safely with animals, assessing the welfare status of an animal, basic animal first aid, and infection control.

ACMGEN304 Promote positive wellbeing in self and others in animal care workplaces is a core unit, and it is worth pausing on. Shelter and veterinary work carries well-documented emotional load, and the training package treats staff wellbeing as a competency rather than a personal matter.

Four named specialisations appear on the testamur, including Pet Grooming — a distinct trade with its own businesses and customers.

Frequently asked questions

Which specialisation should I choose?
Pet Grooming is a distinct trade with its own salons; Customer Service is front-of-house in veterinary and animal businesses; Animal Care is shelters, boarding and welfare. All four appear on the testamur, so ask a provider which they deliver.
Does this make me a vet nurse?
No. Veterinary nursing is a separate Certificate IV qualification. This covers animal care services roles with discretion and judgement, but not clinical nursing.
Why is a wellbeing unit in the core?
Because animal care and shelter work carries a well-documented emotional load. ACMGEN304 treats managing that as a workplace competency rather than something you handle alone.
Are there entry requirements?
No. The register records none for ACM30122.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Both are set by each provider and are not published on the national register.
